VorteXML Allows for Easy Conversion of Structured Text Data Output into Valid XML

[December 18th 2000] Datawatch Corporation has announced that it is offering a free, fully functional beta release version of VorteXML, a software tool that allows users to easily convert structured text data into XML. A free downloadable beta version of VorteXML is available immediately at www.vortexml.com.

VorteXML allows users to extract, transform and export valid XML from any recurring structured text data output such as reports, invoices, log files and EDI documents. In many cases, this output is the sole source of straightforward access to this information. Using structured text data output can eliminate the need to decipher the complex database schema and program logic of existing systems. Users can generate XML documents without "reinventing the wheel".

“Although XML is the consensus format to enable straightforward data exchange between systems and organisations, the ability to transform existing transactional data output into XML particularly for B2B is still a big roadblock for many organisations,” said John Kitchen, vice president of marketing at Datawatch. “VorteXML is a practical short cut for taking the output from existing systems and transforming it into XML – it eliminates the need to use complex 4GL or other database programming tools to gather data for XML creation.

“Organisations haven’t previously used structured text data as an XML source because such output typically has a complex structure and data relationships that make it difficult to parse and export into different formats,” continued Kitchen. “VorteXML makes it simple.” “VorteXML will make it easy for organisations to convert transactional data into XML from their existing business infrastructures for storage in XML-based DBMS such as Tamino ,” said Michael Champion, advisory R&D specialist for new technologies at Software AG and co-editor of the core
XML portion of the DOM Level 1 recommendation. “This will allow companies to spend more time improving their e-business applications and processes without worrying about how to produce the appropriate XML data from their current systems.”
VorteXML will be available as a personal edition for desktop XML data transformation and a server edition that will allow users to fully automate the XML conversion process on an event or scheduled basis. The full personal edition of VorteXML will be available in Q1 of calendar year 2001; the server edition of VorteXML will be available in Q2.

BACKGROUND ON VORTEXML

Designed to make data transformation as easy as possible, VorteXML utilises proven report parsing and recognition technology from Datawatch’s industry leading report mining Monarch software to reduce the complexity of transforming text data to valid XML. VorteXML reads structured text data files downloaded from any mainframe or mini computer, or produced on a PC. These files are commonly known as print files or spool files, but are also referred to as text files (TXT), formatted text files, PRN files and SDF files.
VorteXML uses two distinct modes of operation: input and output. The input mode is responsible for the extraction of data, the creation of calculated fields and creation of the hierarchy and relationships in the data. The output mode is responsible for mapping of data to the attributes and elements in a DTD (and soon from Microsoft XDR and W3C XSD schemas) and the validation and export of the XML data.
Once defined, these input and output rules may be saved in a profile file for use every time the user needs to export the same source type output to XML. VorteXML excels in taking the pain out of repetitive conversion tasks.
