Peramon  removes email language barrier for WAP users

[May 10th 2000] Peramon has launched an international version of LexicosLite, the first multi-lingual email management system for Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) mobile phone users. LexicosLite is a user-friendly software application that now allows users across Europe to access and manage their existing corporate and ISP email in nine different langauges while on the move  without the need to change their existing email address .

The new version of LexicosLite is the first WAP email product to operate in more than a single language - the system is designed to operate in French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Finnish and Swedish. This innovative WAP connector is able to recognise which language a mobile phone is set to and serve-up the appropriate language. A Spanish business user, for example, connecting to his or her email system in the UK via a WAP phone would be presented with a Spanish interface.

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) providing WAP email to subscribers across Europe can therefore use LexicosLite as a key differentiator. It is also well placed for use by multinational corporations looking to improve the communication capabilities of their employees in different countries.

“According to market researchers Datamonitor, over 186 million people, that’s around 69 per cent of all mobile phone users in Europe, will have WAP capabilities by 2005,” said David Townsend, managing director of Peramon.  “But despite the size and advanced nature of the market in Europe we are a continent still divided by language barriers.”

“Email remains the ‘killer application’ in driving people onto the internet, and so a simple, multi-lingual WAP email system is vital if businesses and service providers are to maximise the potential of the mobile communications market as we move towards the future third generation mobile networks,” added Townsend.

Nad Nadesan, Peramon’s marketing director said: “We have very few competitors with this product. No one in the world is able to match the breadth of language, phone and platform support provided by LexicosLite. In addition to the European market, this application is also a natural fit for the South American continent. We have drawn on our past experience at Digital AltaVista of designing international products to ensure LexicosLite meets the precise requirements of the European marketplace.”

LexicosLite provides WAP access to any existing email system and offers an intuitive email interface which maximises the screen display available on today’s mobile devices. The system has the following key features:

·                     Support for nine languages

·                     Incoming email alert

·                     Keyword email retrieval

·                     Comprehensive address book features

·                     Email composition facilities via phone keypad

·                     Standard text response facility for increased speed on the move

The international version of LexicosLite is compatible with all major mobile phone and PDA devices and can be installed on all major operating systems including Microsoft NT, HP-UX and Sun Solaris.
