Whotooth offers gay contacts

by Tony Dennis

An inventive use for Bluetooth has be found by the gay and lesbian community. A web site, Whotooth, says helps participants find others of a similar inclination. The concept is very simple. All you have to do is change the standard Bluetooth 'name' which every Bluetooth enabled handset displays. Change it from something boring like 'Nokia N95' to the code which the web site supplies. There are two codes – one for gay men and one for lesbians. The six figure Whotooth code is changed every Wednesday at 9am (GMT). The site claims that this is done so that people who have stopped looking can be identified by other participants. It's possible to add codes of your own, however without ever visiting the site. For example, 'mx /sl bf' means 'mixed race seeks slim boyfriend,' apparently. To make it work you have to go to the handset's Bluetooth settings and ensure that the phone is visible to others. Then it is apparently easy to put the phone into Bluetooth scanning mode – technically known as 'pairing'. Anybody who's into Whotooth will display the special code. When you find somebody it's a choice of sending them a 'business card' or maybe even a picture of yourself along with a caption. If this catches on fast, heterosexuals are going to feel very definitely left out.
