Nokia Launches Latest WAP 1.2 Developer Toolkit For Next Generation
Services
[June 22nd 2000] Nokia has announced the newest version of its WAP Toolkit for
network operators, application developers and content providers.
Nokia WAP Toolkit 2.0 is a free software tool that provides a
PC-based environment for developers to write, test and de-bug WAP 1.1
and 1.2 applications. The latest version of the toolkit contains two
separate mobile phone simulators. A Nokia 7100 Series phone simulator
is provided for prototyping WAP 1.1 services as they would appear on
the phones currently available in the marketplace. In addition, a
second "concept" phone is provided for prototyping more advanced WAP
1.2 applications, including push services.
The Nokia WAP Toolkit is currently available for downloading
free-of-charge for all developers registered in the Nokia WAP
Developer Forum at www.forum.nokia.com.
With the Nokia Toolkit 2.0, a WAP application developer can create
complete applications without the need for a handset or access to
carrier infrastructure. Testing and demonstrating WAP applications is
simple and straightforward because the developer can navigate and
request URLs on either a limited version of the Nokia WAP Server that
is included with each tool kit or on any web server on the Internet.
In addition, applications can also be stored and queried directly
from the PC file system.
To date, well over 100,000 developers have already downloaded
previous versions of the Nokia WAP toolkit.
"Compelling applications are central to both the success of WAP and
to Nokia's vision of the Mobile Information Society," said Pertti
Lounamaa, vice president, Nokia Internet Communications. “With the
unique combination of the Nokia WAP Server and the latest WAP
Toolkit, Nokia provides application developers and system integrators
with the means to build the services that are driving this rapidly
expanding market."

Nokia WAP Server
The Nokia WAP Server is the world's most recognized WAP-server
targeted for the corporate market, transforming a static web site
into a real-time mobile business and powerful marketing tool
independent of time and place. It connects WAP enabled mobile
handsets to content and services hosted by Web servers or any other
Intranet or Internet server securely and cost-effectively, including
e-mail, schedules, directories and contacts as well as e-business
specific applications. The newest version of the Nokia WAP Server,
1.1, complies with the WAP 1.1 specification and sets the industry
milestone with its security option, Nokia's security pack with a
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) together with the implementation of the
Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS) functionality.
About Nokia Activ
Nokia Activ is a one-button solution for web sites that provides
over-the-air settings. Previously consumers had to manually enter URL
information into their WAP phones in order to access content. With
Nokia Activ, companies can immediately offer their services and
information to large numbers of mobile phone users in an easy manner.
Consumers click the Nokia Activ button on a WAP-enabled web site and
type in their mobile phone number. The settings of the service are
sent over-the-air to the customer’s WAP phone.
